Making a good first impression in your interview

First impressions can have a lasting impact on peoples' feeling about you as an employee. The impression you leave during an interview will determine whether or not you are the right fit for those hiring.

Here are some helpful tips to keep note of next time you're heading into an interview...

Do Your Research

Before you attend the job interview, take the time to research and learn as much as you can about the company. Doing your homework prior to attending that interview allows you to ask important questions about the company that show your interest, and help you to stand out as a passionate individual.

Additionally, the more you know about the company and what they look for in their employees, the more you can tailor your answers to show off the skills and characteristics that your employers might be searching for.

Dress Appropriately

Never overlook your appearance during your interview. When it comes to dressing for an interview, it pays to be ‘over-dressed’ (appropriately of course) than just throwing anything together.

That being said, make sure that you dress the part for your interview. This can vary depending on your desired role and industry. For example, the dress code for the construction industry may differ greatly from an office/administration position, however both require appropriate dress in your interview. If you’re still unsure, err on the conservative side.

Ask Questions

It’s important to ask questions during an interview as it shows you’ve thought about the job and what it will involve.

Ask questions about information that isn’t available elsewhere. For example, don’t ask about things that are answered on the organisation’s website.

Some of the questions you’ve prepared may be answered during the interview. You’ll need to keep track of these so that you don’t ask a question about something that has been answered.

For example:

•Can you tell me more about the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of this position?
•Will there be opportunities for increased responsibility?
•Can you tell me about the team I will be working with?
•What is the culture of the organisation like?

Be the Best Version of Yourself

The desire to make a good first impression can sometimes leave us feeling as though we need to completely change our personality according to the perceived needs of our audience.

However, the truth is that it’s best to be yourself. Allow your unique personality to shine through and let it differentiate you from your competitors.
